A lot of times, when I’m working with photographers, especially during the Photography Basics class or private lessons, I’ll be asked about some photography axioms.

The two that come to mind are the rule of thirds and the sunny 16 rule.

A lotta photographers are told to follow the rule of thirds or the sunny 16 rule when we’re starting in photography.

If you're one of ‘em, do yourself a favor and DON’T!

We hear these about these so-called "helpful rules" everywhere.
 

The rule of thirds tells us to put our subject on imaginary lines, and the sunny 16 rule suggests a one-size-fits-all approach to exposure in bright daylight.
 

Such ideas are useless and stifle our creativity.

When we focus on formulas instead of looking and thinking for ourselves, we wind up making the same predictable pictures as everyone else.

But although we can't count on creativity numbing routines, the only thing we can count on is our understanding of photography—how camera operation, composition, and light all relate and work together.
 

That’s what truly guides us, not shortcuts or rules.
 

That’s exactly what I’m here to help you with.

And that’s what we study and practice in the Photography Basics/Introduction To Photography class.
