The work we do should drive the equipment we use.

For example.

In general, the equipment that a sports photographer uses will likely be different than what a portrait photographer would use.

When we’re starting, we probably just have a general interest in photography, so we probably don’t know what kind of work we wanna do, and if we do, we may not know the type of equipment we’ll need.

At least that’s the way it was with me.
 

But once we get an idea of the type of work we wanna do, the right equipment makes all the difference in our photography.

Sometimes we get stuck thinking we need the top-of-the-line equipment, but it’s really about knowing how to use what we’ve got and making thoughtful choices with our equipment.

But it’s not only about having the right equipment for the job.

We have to apply the right thought process, too.

The pictures we make depend on how we think about the light we see and what we want to communicate through our photography as much as the equipment we use.

When we combine thoughtful use of our equipment with clear visual intent, that’s when our work stands out.

We could use any camera—even the ones on our phone—and with skill, create unique and engaging compositions.
 

Still, the depth of composition influences our work’s impact.
 

Simple cameras are excellent, but DSLRs and mirrorless cameras allow for even more complex compositions.

We study and practice with complex cameras during the Photography Basics/Introduction to Photography class, and the March series of classes is scheduled to start soon.
