Yesterday I worked with a photographer during the second of two private lessons.

The first lesson was to get the photographer working in manual exposure mode by bracketing in one-stop increments to intentionally change tonality from the standard tonality settings achieved by first starting in aperture or shutter priority mode.

The second lesson got him working only in manual exposure mode, focusing effectively and efficiently, metering, achieving a standard tonality through metering, then achieving a preferred tonality, and how aperture and shutter speed control depth of field and blur, and working with equivalent tonalities to keep our preferred tonality.

That’s a lotta stuff to study and practice.
 

He was gifted 2 hours of private lessons, but we ended up going about 3 hours to make sure we covered what needed to be covered.

Within that time, we essentially covered the first two meetings of the introduction to photography class.

We crammed 5 to 6 hours of studying and practicing into 3 hours.

Still, given the time we had to work with, I thought we did a good job of covering what needed covering to get him making thoughtfully and intentionally composed photographs while working in the exposure mode that allows us to be the most expressive and intentional- manual exposure mode.

By the end of the two lessons, he said he understood a lot more than he did before we started.

He went from approaching his photography from a place of not understanding to approaching his photography from a place of understanding, and it’s from that place of understanding that we become better photographers.

And that’s the place we all wanna be in, and that’s the place I can help you get to.
