Almost every day, it seems like there’s a new way to do photography.
Maybe it’s a new camera, maybe it’s a new app, maybe it’s a new way to share images, or maybe camera technology’s evolved.
Smartphones, editing software, and social media have made it easier than ever to do photography and show a picture to the world in seconds.
But for all the ways we do photography have changed, the heart of photography hasn’t changed
a bit.
I often work with photographers who feel overwhelmed by all the technology and trends.
A running question seems to be about if we’re missing out if we don’t use the latest stuff.
And what we usually
conclude is this: No matter how technologically advanced the camera or how quick we could share imagery around the world, photography still boils down to the same fundamentals—seeing, understanding light, composing thoughtfully, and making decisions with intent.
Sure, we can press a button and let our camera do the work.
But if we want to make photographs that are more than just point-and-shoot quality—pictures that say something unique about how we see and experience the world— we’ve gotta do better than point-and-shoot quality work.
That’s what hasn’t changed.
The
camera is just a tool.
Whether it’s the camera on our phone or a high-end DSLR or mirrorless, what matters is the photographer’s approach: are we studying and practicing, or just pointing and shooting?
So, if we feel boxed in by all the new ways to "do" photography, remember that the basics still matter most.
Camera operation, composition,
and the characteristics of light—those are our visual toolbox.
Everything else is just a different way to do photography.
The Photography Basics/Introduction To Photography class or a series of private lessons are different ways to study and practice photography that’ll teach you to use your camera intentionally and with confidence.
However you choose to study and practice with me, I’ll help you become the
best photographer you can be.
And if you’re not sure which class fits your needs, just ask—I’m always happy to help.
