Before we upgrade our camera, it’s worth asking one simple question:
What are we actually getting when you add more megapixels?
A lot of photographers I’ve met, especially those I work with in my classes, think that ” better” cameras mean better photographers, especially when it comes to megapixels.
I wanna be clear: sometimes the
equipment we get helps us be better photographers, but it has to be an intentional decision based on the work we do and what we need our cameras to do.
But a lot of photographers start thinking the next step is a new camera—something with more megapixels, more resolution, more “power.”
But after getting to know them and becoming familiar with their work, the issue usually isn’t resolution.
It’s understanding.
Here’s what megapixels really do—and why they matter less than most people think:
- Megapixels measure resolution, not quality — they tell you how much detail can be recorded
- More megapixels give us cropping flexibility — helpful, but not essential
- They
matter most for large prints or commercial work
- They don’t improve light, timing, or composition
- Higher megapixels come with trade-offs — larger files, slower workflows
In other words, upgrading our camera just to get
more megapixels won’t fix what we gotta fix with understanding skills and technique.
When we stop getting so distracted by specs and start giving our attention to understanding what actually helps us to make better photographs, the
interrelationship between camera operation, composition, and light, we become better photographers, and when that happens, our photography studies and practice take a turn for the better.
That’s when our photography starts to feel more
consistent, more intentional, and a lot more creative.
If we wanna be better photographers, it helps to know everything we can about photography, and understanding megapixels helps us do that.
