I’ll help you to UNDERSTAND PHOTOGRAPHY TO CREATE MEANINGFUL AND EXPRESSIVE PHOTOGRAPHS ANYTIME, ANYWHERE.
Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
I hear this question a lot from photographers: which
matters most—aperture, shutter speed, or ISO?
All three of ‘em matter—but not equally in every photograph.
When we want motion to blur into a visual flow of energy, we use a slower shutter speed.
When we wanna record motion as static/frozen?
A faster shutter speed’ll do the job.
Want a subject to stand out or blend into the background?
Aperture’s our go-to setting.
When we’re considering the brightness of the transmitting (available) light, or the texture caused by noise or grain in our photograph, then we’ve gotta consider ISO.
Each setting controls tonality—but it also adds a unique visual effect, which in turn adds compositional and visually diverse communicative meaning.
Every choice helps us create a photograph that communicates what we wanna say.
Our best photographs go beyond technical excellence the moment we define their intent—whether fact, fiction, emotion, or opinion.
That’s when our intent drives our control of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and our control of those three camera functions is a separate and unique element of compositional expression.
When working with me in a group class or private lesson, we’ll hone our skills so we can make deliberate choices to bring that intent into our work.
Every adjustment supports the message we want the photograph to convey, not just the exposure.
Ready to move beyond guessing and start making photographs intentionally and confidently?
