Today was the fourth of four meetings of the introduction to photography class.

As usual, one of the things we covered in depth was white balance.
 

White balance is probably one of the most overlooked creative controls in photography.

Most photographers leave it on automatic, but that means that they’re missing out on using color as a compositional element.

Why White Balance Matters

• When we use white balance to warm up or cool down a picture by shifting it toward red or blue, we’re using white balance creatively to add a psychological element to our work.
• We can influence the viewer’s emotions with color.
• Communicate using color intentionally instead of just color “correctness”.

Give This a Try

• Instead of auto white balance, try using presets. ( Each preset represents a color temperature of a specific and common transmitting light source.)
• Intentionally pick the "wrong" white balance and observe the effect.
