Even though cameras and photographers are everywhere, and making a picture is easier than it’s ever been in the history of photography, especially when working in an automatic exposure mode, why are excellent pictures such a rarity?
 

Here’s why!
 

• Most photographers stick to easy. And by easy, I mean taking shortcuts like using rules of composition and exposure modes on cameras that do the work for us. When that happens, everybody winds up with the same look in their photography.
   
• Excellent photographs require an intentional photographer. That means knowing our intent of composition and operating our cameras intentionally to get the compositions we want. We also need to be intentional about observing and describing light because when we learn to observe and describe the light, we’re saying it helps us understand what we need to do to operate our camera to get the composition we want.
   
• There’s a short supply of photographers committed to curiosity-based studies and practice. Most photographers don’t study in practice persistently and consistently in order to get a firm understanding of the interrelationship between camera operation, composition, and light. And when we don’t study or practice enough, we fail to develop a unique visual sensibility, leading to photographs that communicate a distinctive visual voice. The more we question, the more we learn—and the more we learn, the better photographers we become and the better our pictures get.

That's why I limit my group classes to no more than five participants because smaller classes make for better, more effective, and more efficient learning experiences.
