Convenience makes things easy.

If we look at the exposure modes on our cameras, the easiest and most convenient one by a long shot is the fully automatic exposure mode.

All we gotta do to make a picture is take care of our framing and content, and then press the shutter release to make the exposure when we feel the time is right.  

While easy might be convenient, we give up a lot in terms of our creativity and composition.

Part of the reason ''easy and convenient" photography sounds so attractive is that we don't consider the creative cost.

We remind ourselves of the time, extra effort, and decisions we don't have to deal with when working in manual exposure mode, which offers us the most creativity.

But, as I mentioned, convenience costs us creatively, but it also costs us in terms of the lack of our humanity in our work, our ability to connect with others through our imagery, and to communicate about the things we really care about.

It's a good idea to remind ourselves what we're giving up in exchange for easy and convenient.

Maybe we should start thinking of making pictures that take effort and communicate what we wanna communicate as "Photography that's worth doing".

Bigger ain't always better.

That's why I limit my group classes to no more than five participants because smaller classes make for better, more effective, and more efficient learning experiences.
