Regardless of where we are in our evolution as photographers, we’re doing the best we can.
Whether we’re working in fully automatic exposure mode, manual exposure mode, or anywhere in between, we’re doing OK.
Whatever our circumstances are, they require choices.
But what are we basing our choices on?
What is it that makes up our circumstances?
When considering our awareness, priorities, and
situation, we’re considering our circumstances, and those are the things we gotta base our choices on.
Specifically, our circumstances include our understanding of camera operation, composition, and light when it comes to our studies and
practice.
Of course, along with the things mentioned above, it also includes the equipment we have and the light we have to work with.
Depending on the work we do, some of our circumstances are beyond our control, like the light we have to work with.
But whatever our circumstances, we still got choices to make.
And one of the choices we gotta make is what exposure mode to work in.
Automatic exposure mode limits our choices to framing and content, and to pressing the shutter release to make an exposure.
Fully manual exposure
mode gives us unlimited choices.
The more choices we have, the more possibilities and variations for our compositions.
As soon as we stop working in automatic exposure mode, even if we choose one of the priority exposure modes, we get access to a lot more camera functionality than we had in automatic exposure mode.
More camera functionality means more choices; more choices mean more compositional possibilities.
Whether we limit our choices by working
in automatic exposure mode or get all the choices we can, we’re doing the best we can considering our circumstances at the moment, but remember, we could always do better.
And when we do better, our circumstances change.
