Our photography studies and practice pull us in two directions.

One way is as a distinct activity; it’s something we do to show what we see.
 

We observe and describe light, and operate our camera with the intent of creating a picture that conveys what we want it to.

Maybe it starts as a hobby or as a way to document the things we see that catch our attention.

But the more we study and practice, the more things change.

Over time, photography becomes less about something we do and more about something we are.
 

It becomes a way of seeing—and creating a picture that doesn't merely reflect what we saw but shows how we think about what we see.
 

We find ourselves experiencing light differently and composing pictures in our mind, even when we don't intend to make a photograph.
 

I’ve noticed that shift in myself and in the photographers I work with.

This usually happens when we get more involved in the relationship between camera operation, composition, and light, as we do during any if the classes I offer.
 

The shift happens gradually, but the way we become a photographer is by doing photography.

 
 That’s where the Photography Basics/Introduction to Photography class comes in.
