In terms of any type of camera operation, and what I mean by any type of camera is either film or digital, the three most important things that influence the outcome of our composition are aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

Regardless of the camera we use, these three things are foundational to creating a photograph.
 

Compositionally, they all control tonality, but each has its own additional compositional influence.

When it comes to digital photography, other important camera operation considerations include white balance, focusing areas and modes, image size, and image quality.

But the most important compositional control function on any camera is the one that lets us choose our exposure mode.

That's because the exposure mode either limits or expands our creative expression.

Automatic exposure modes limit our creative expression, while manual exposure mode expands it endlessly.

What we need to do as photographers is figure out which exposure mode allows us to create the best pictures we can that visually communicate what we wanna express.

But let's be clear: it's not the camera that matters as much as how we use it.

Whether we're using the cameras on our phones or a more complex camera, such as a DSLR or mirrorless camera, what matters is using whatever camera we're working with as creatively as possible.
