While sitting in the office of the executive coordinator for the doctor I saw yesterday, I noticed the photography on her wall.
It was an engaging work, and I was curious to know more about it.
It was her work, and during our
conversation, she stated that photography relaxes her.
That’s a great reason to do photography, but what I found interesting was that each one of the compositions I saw on the wall visually communicated relaxation.
Especially
the use of the horizon lines.
I made a point of telling her that one of the reasons her photography conveys the relaxation she feels is because of the use of horizontal lines in her composition.
There was more to it than that,
but those horizontal lines were in almost every one of her photographs.
Whether she was consciously aware of that when she was creating the photograph isn’t important; what's important is that she effectively communicated the calm she feels while making the picture.
One of the most important things we could do in terms of our photography, studies, and practice is to have an intent of composition that reflects what we want to communicate through our photography.
But to do that, we need to understand how to use our camera.
If we want to be effective visual communicators, we need to understand the relationship between camera operation, composition, and light.
More importantly, instead of photographing what we see, we need to photograph how we think about or feel about what we see.
That’s what my Photography Basics/Introduction to Photography class will help you do, and we start as soon as tomorrow.
