The two main reasons I became a photojournalist were that I didn’t need much equipment, and I got to make pictures of a lot of different things.
 

That part about photographing a lot of different things is what made me an adaptive photographer, meaning I didn’t specialize in anything; instead, I’m considered a generalist.

After years of working as a photojournalist, I learned that adaptability isn’t about being a jack-of-all-trades.
 

It’s about seeing every subject—from architecture to zebras—as an observance of light.

Adaptive photographers don’t just see an object; they see that object as a light source and describe the characteristics of that light source.

Instead of specializing in one subject, adaptive photographers specialize in understanding light.
 

That’s what lets us photograph almost anything, anywhere, any time.

When we know how to observe and describe light's characteristics, and as long as we know what we’re doing with our camera (especially in manual exposure mode), we’ll create compositions that are uniquely ours, because we can confidently photograph anything that gets our attention.

Bigger ain't always better.

That's why I limit my group classes to no more than five participants because smaller classes make for better, more effective, and more efficient learning experiences.
