Why Photographing Once-in-a-Lifetime Moments Matters (and How to Do It Well)
Every moment only happens once.
But some of those moments feel more important than others to us
The first step, a last hug, a facial expression that speaks volumes — a blink of the eye, and they’re gone.
As photographers, we’re the ones who can record those moments , but only if we’re ready for them.
It’s not luck when we successfully photograph a once-in-a-lifetime shot.
It’s knowing how to operate our cameras skillfully, understanding how camera operation affects composition, and our ability to observe and describe the light we’re seeing.
If we don’t know, we’re probably working with our cameras in an automatic exposure mode, hoping for a decent photograph when we
press the shutter release and make an exposure.
That’s not the best approach.
Moments don’t wait for
us to figure out what we’re doing while fumbling around with understanding how our camera works, second-guessing our compositional choices, and trying to figure out what we need to do to photograph the characteristics of the light that this unique moment is
That’s why we’ve gotta understand photography in its entirety, meaning camera operation, composition, and
light, because we understand photography along those lines, we know what to do to prepare to record those once-in-a-lifetime moments in the best way we can.
