When it’s time to get a new camera, there’s a lot of choices, and it can seem overwhelming.
 

Photography’s changed a lot since the time I started studying and practicing.

Before digital cameras, all we had to work with was film.
 

Our only concern was which film format to work with.
 

And since many photographers worked with a 35mm film format, we just had to worry about which brand and model of 35mm camera to use.
 

And the primary manufacturers back then were Nikon and Canon.

Now, we’ve got DSLRs, mirrorless, and even cameras on our phones.

So, what’s the difference?

• DSLR: Uses a mirror for an optical viewfinder—what you see is what you get. We get a bigger sensor than the cameras on our phones, more creative control, and the optical system uses less battery since it doesn’t need a screen or electronic viewfinder.

• Mirrorless: No mirror, lighter, digital preview, and offers a bigger sensor than the cameras on our phones, as well as creative control. The live video feed on mirrorless cameras uses more battery because the screen or electronic viewfinder is always on.

And

• Mirrorless cameras are compact. DSLRs usually last longer on a charge than mirrorless cameras and offer a wider range of lens options.

• While phones are handy, DSLRs and mirrorless cameras offer us a lot more creative options and a lot better image quality.

Whatever camera we choose, the bottom line is that we wanna make the pictures we want, which communicate what we wanna say.
 

Remember, it’s not the camera that makes the picture, it’s the photographer who makes the photograph.
 

That means we’ve (photographers) gotta learn about camera operation, composition, and light.

Bigger ain't always better.

That's why I limit my group classes to no more than five participants because smaller classes make for better, more effective, and more efficient learning experiences.
