What Are You? A Pisces?
The photo editor of a small local newspaper in Watchung, N.J., who assigned me a "test assignment," asked me that question while looking at the bucolic photograph I handed in.
The question told me that my chances were slim to none that I'd be doin' any work for that newspaper anytime soon, and as my heart sank, I answered, "Yup, I'm a Pisces."
With her question, she was really telling me that I had no idea what news photography was about.
On the upside, the same bucolic picture got me an A
in the Photography 101 class I took at a local community college.
The lesson learned at that time?; I was a good photographer, but I had no idea how to do the work I wanted to do professionally.
So I kept pluggin' along.
I kept taking classes and looking to work with newspapers and photography editors who'd give a good photographer with no professional experience a chance.
The classes helped me improve my skills
and understanding of photography, and the editors who decided to take a chance on me helped me grow professionally and also helped me improve my understanding, knowledge, and skills more practically through the experience of working professionally and the mentorship they provided.
I learned a lotta lessons along the way, and I keep learnin' 'em.
Although I've now got strong skills when it comes to photography, I keep honing them and learning new skills as needed.
The common lesson for all of us is that if we really wanna do what we wanna do, we'll recognize the struggles and difficulties we run into are the ways to improve our skills and understanding, and with that recognition, we'll persevere.
And with perseverance, we can succeed.

A note about group class sizes: Did you know that some places that teach photography have up to 25 students in each
class?
Bigger ain't always better.
That's why I limit my group classes to no more than five participants because smaller classes make for better, more effective, and more efficient learning experiences.
But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker, so sign up soon.
