Let's take a look at how luck affects our photography.

Simply put, we're lucky to see what we see, and that's the entire amount of luck involved in photography.

Unless we decide to operate our camera in a way that depends on luck.

Here's how that happens.

When we're lucky enough to see something we're interested in photographing, we take out our camera.

And depending on the exposure mode we choose, we take our chances or we don't.

We take a chance if we use any exposure mode except manual, because automatic exposure modes take the picture for us.

When photographers allow the camera to do their job, they're taking a chance that they'll get the picture they need, and that's because the photographers are taking themselves out of the process of making the picture.

In automatic exposure modes, we depend on luck, and we're willing to take our chances that the camera's algorithms will produce the photograph we want and need.

I don't know the exact odds of that happening, but I can tell you they're pretty slim.

But we don't have to depend on luck.

That's where manual exposure mode comes in.

When working in manual exposure mode, we don't depend on luck; we rely on understanding the interplay of camera operation, composition, and light.

That's exactly what we study and practice during the Photography Basics/Introduction to Photography class.

That's why I limit my group classes to no more than five participants because smaller classes make for better, more effective, and more efficient learning experiences.
