And for what it's worth, when you send me an email unless someone's lookin' over my shoulder, I'm the only one who sees it.

A spatula is better for flippin’ a burger, but a ladle is better for getting soup out of a pot.

If we’re talking about relatively better things, this is the better of utility.

In other words, we use what most effectively and efficiently gets the job done.
 

And then we got the better of taste.

You might like ketchup on that burger we just flipped, but I might like
 

The better of utility and the better of taste apply to our photography, too.

The utility of photography is to communicate facts or personal expression.

How taste applies to photography involves the cameras we choose, how we operate those cameras, and the settings we pick to create the compositions we prefer.

To put it another way, when we think about utility and photography, we think about getting the job done in terms of what we want to communicate; on the other hand, when we think about taste and photography, we think about personal preferences.

When our taste overrides the utility in our photography, we’ve gotta acknowledge that we’re doing that.
 

Just because we like the composition of our photograph doesn’t mean it’s doing the job it needs to do.
 

I learned that lesson a long time ago when I started working as a photojournalist.
 

It’s one of the most important lessons I’ve ever learned, and I think it’s one of the most important lessons any photographer can learn.

A note about group class sizes: Did you know that some places that teach photography have up to 25 students in each class? 

Bigger ain't always better.

That's why I limit my group classes to no more than five participants because smaller classes make for better, more effective, and more efficient learning experiences.

But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker, so sign up soon.
