The mind of a seasoned photographer sees everything as a source of light.
And by seeing and understanding the characteristics of the light, assuming they understand camera operation and composition, they know what they need to do to make the best photograph they can with the light they are experiencing
With this type of mind, we could practice photography anytime, anywhere, even without a camera
For example, if we tap
into our photographer's mind, we could see whatever light we’re singing and imagine it is a photograph
When we imagined it as a photograph, we could begin to imagine what we need to do in terms of camera operation to get the picture we
want
What aperture would we pick to get the depth of field we need?
Which shutter speed would we prefer to achieve the amount of blur that is visually supportive?
What ISO would be tolerable in terms of noise?
Not to mention, what should we focus on to make whatever we’re focusing on sharp?
We can do this with or without a camera by observing and describing the light's characteristics.
We should practice generously, as much
and as often as possible.
We strengthen our understanding and hone our technique when we practice generously and frequently.
In a nutshell, this means that if we’re going to be photographers, we’ve got to do photography.
Even thinking about the process of creating a picture is good practice because that is the step before camera
operation.
Before considering how we would use our camera to create a picture, we’ve gotta define what we want our picture to communicate.
There’s an old joke.
A violinist who has just graduated from music school
gets off the subway in New York, goes up to an old gentleman, and asks him how to get to Carnegie Hall.
And the old gentleman answers, “Practice!”
The same goes for our photography.
How do we get to be skilled photographers!?
Practice!
