Today was the third of four meetings during the Introduction to Photography class that started earlier this month.

The main topic for today was a technique I call metering and Tonal placement.

Metering and tonal placement is a technique that excellently demonstrates the relationships between light, camera operation, and composition.
 

This technique allows us to meter for something specific, and before we make the photograph, we change our aperture, shutter speed, or ISO to change the tonality of our picture; this means we get the exact tonality we want on the first picture.
 

In other words, there’s no longer a need to make a picture and then increase or decrease exposure with aperture and shutter speed or increase or decrease light sensitivity with ISO to make our picture as bright or dark as we want (achieving our preferred tonality).
 

This technique allows us to work more efficiently.

But beyond efficiency, this technique demonstrates that the photographer understands the relationship between light intensity (light), controlling tonality (composition), and using either aperture, shutter speed, or ISO to control the picture tonality (camera operation).

You'll learn to do that during my Introduction to Photography class.

It's a class that'll get you to understand how to operate your camera in manual exposure mode to have the most creative control possible over your pictures.

When we can do that, we create unique compositions.
