The holiday we associate with love will be here in five days.
I got a call from someone looking to get the love in their life a gift different from the ubiquitous heart-shaped box of chocolates, the overdone dozen roses that eventually wilt and die, or the one-and-done expensive dinner out for Valentine's
Day.
They felt that since the person they were seeking the gift for was a photographer struggling with camera operation, photography lessons were an excellent gift since they would have a lasting impact on the person receiving the
gift.
Of course, I couldn't agree more.
But the gift of photography lessons will help the photographer way more than learning to work their camera.
On top of learning to work their camera confidently,
effectively, and efficiently, they'll learn;
- To see things differently.
- To become a better communicator.
- To slow down and be deliberate/intentional in their actions.
- To take a moment to examine how they feel and think about what they're seeing so they can communicate those thoughts and feelings through their camera.
- To become more expressive and creative.
There's more, but on top of what we do when we learn about camera operation, composition, and light, our mind changes so that we begin to experience the world differently.
A lot of people think
photography is all about cameras and other equipment.
Although that's important, the intent of using the equipment to intentionally visually communicate facts, opinions, concepts, and feelings is most important.
A camera is a tool that communicates the human experience of the world, and if we think about the cameras in space, it goes beyond our world and into the universe.
We become effective visual communicators when we learn about photography and become adept at camera operation, composition, and observing and describing light.
When giving gifts this Valentine's Day or nearly any occasion that calls for a gift, giving a gift that will teach someone to become a better photographer beats a box of chocolates any day.
