Complaining is valuable and allows us to improve because we usually follow up a
complaint with an action.
On the other hand, whining is similar to complaining, but whining doesn't accomplish anything except as an exaggerated expression of frustration and disappointment.
In other words, whining is done just for whining, whereas complaining is done to get something changed through action.
When it comes to improving our photography, whining don't help, but complaining can help us improve.
When we complain,
it's a good idea to think about why we're complaining.
As I mentioned, we complain because we want to change something through an activity to change it for the better.
We should be clear about what we want changed and what activity would make that change happen.
Once we do that, it's most effective to focus on the complaints that'll do the most good, prepare to do the work that'll have the most impact, and then do the work we need to do to have the impact we want.
When it comes to the complaints I hear most often as a photography instructor, the most frequent complaint is about not understanding how to operate a camera to get an intended picture.
That's a valuable
complaint because it clarifies what the photographer wants to be changed, and the fact that they're speaking with me means they recognize that the actions involved in learning about camera operation, composition, and light what actions will help them get the change they want.
And, just like all of us, the change they want is to be better photographers.
