If we photograph what we see, we'll base our composition on our limited visual
experience.
However, if we photograph how we think or feel about what we see, we'll base our composition on the unique way each of us interprets what we're experiencing with our unique state of mind.
In other words, our intention isn't only an interesting two-dimensional design; our intent is an interesting two-dimensional design that also communicates our visual interpretation and communication of facts, opinions, concepts, feelings, etc.
No two minds interpret the same thing in the same way, and when we realize that our unique interpretation of the world is the key to creating unique, expressive imagery, we realize our unique visual voice.
Our challenge is fully expressing our unique visual voice with our cameras.
If we want to express ourselves fully with our cameras, we need to have the most creative control possible, and the only way to do that is in manual exposure mode.
In manual exposure mode, we have
full control over choosing our apertures, shutter speeds, ISO metering patterns, focusing modes and areas, etc.
When we have complete control of that stuff, our compositional possibilities are endless, and we can fully realize our creative
expressions.
In other words, we can create visually complex photographs that go beyond a simple visual representation of what we see; we can add the complexity of our unique thought process that expresses our unique visual voice through
the process of communicating our mind's interpretation of how we think about what we see and experience through our cameras.
This is the way to create unique, visually complex photographs that'll engage the eye and communicate whatever we
intend.
