Camera technology has gotten out of hand.
There's a lot more functionality and features that are more like Instagram filters and some of the technology has little or nothing to do with understanding photography.
Furthermore, the technology on complex cameras like mirrorless and DSLRs has advanced to the point where, when working in an automatic exposure mode, the photographer can use the camera like a point-and-shoot.
The photographers I work with in my classes have purchased complex cameras because they want to go beyond point-and-shoot photography and learn to work their cameras intentionally to create the pictures they have in mind, not the pictures the cameras give them in automatic exposure mode.
We do this by learning to work in manual exposure mode and cutting through the technological extras that get in the way of creating the pictures they want.
We pay attention to the technology involved in manual exposure, focusing, and metering.
When we limit our studies and
practice to those three camera functions, we clarify the technology primarily needed to create intentional, thoughtful, unique photographs.
Cutting through the technological extras allows us to operate our cameras efficiently and
effectively.
It's an efficient and effective camera operation that allows us to respond to the light we see, use our confidence, and get our pictures "right" on the first try.
Technology may change, but the basics of what we do in terms of camera functions to create excellent photography don't.
Once we know and understand the basics, we're well prepared to create engaging imagery.

And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
