Coin flips are easy.
We leave it up to chance to determine an outcome.
On the other hand, choosing is hard.
Choosing is hard because we're responsible for determining an outcome.
Working our cameras in an automatic exposure mode is like a coin flip using a coin with nearly infinite sides.
On the other hand, working in manual exposure mode is choosing because it involves understanding photography and making deliberate choices when composing our pictures.
Understanding photography means understanding
camera operation, composition, and light and their cause and effect on the outcome of our picture.
Here's the only two possibilities we have when it comes to making photographs:
Our camera decides what our picture will be; that's a coin flip.
Or we make a series of choices regarding camera operation, composition, and light that result in a picture we intentionally and thoughtfully compose.
I can assure you that the second of the two possibilities
is more reliable and affirming as photographers because our choices are grounded in a firm understanding of photography.
In other words, when we understand the cause and effect of camera operation, composition, and light, we know what camera functions to choose to get the best pictures we can, especially when working in manual exposure mode.
