The livability of our lives depends on our necessities for survival.
But play makes our life enjoyable.
Can we do without play?
Yes, but as we've heard, all work and no play make us dull boys and girls.
It's not only dull in the boring sense but dulled in the experience of curiosity, and ain't we lucky to be alive sense.
Play brings out our creativity.
Albert Einstein said it best; "Play is the highest form of research."
As photographers, it's important to play because ideas of right or wrong and bad and good disappear when we play purely out of curiosity.
When we bring a playful mind to our studies and practice, we get lost in our creative play, and in getting lost, we lose the part of ourselves that restricts us.
During my Introduction To Photography class, when I ask participants to practice what we've just covered, it's a way to play with the techniques and camera functions we've just learned.
Play gives us a break from the grind of our work.
When we play regularly, it's the pause that
refreshes and serves to nurture and grow our creativity and understanding.
Our growth as photographers withers without a daily rain of play.
Our actual play knows no rules, especially rules of composition and takes place in the spirit of happy inspiration.
During the Introduction To Photography class, we play during our in-class studies and practice and during the assigned homework.
But we play in a way that combines our understanding of the light we see with knowing how to operate our cameras to get the best compositions we can.

And what if the timing doesn't work for you in any of my scheduled group classes? Private in-person lessons suited to your schedule are always an option.
And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
