Hello, .
What's the best way to be a better photographer?
The answer is consistent and persistent studies and practice.
I know it's a boring answer.
But truthfully, It's what we've gotta do.
Tips and tricks don't work.
Or any rule that has to do with
composing good pictures.
Or [fill in the blank] is the worst way to do whatever.
Some of the things we do regarding camera operation, composition, and observing light are excellent.
But without a
doubt, what makes the most significant difference in people who have improved in ANYTHING is that they consistently practice.
Everyday.
And don't give up.
We might get discouraged.
But don't give up.
Of course, we might adjust our practice according to what works (or doesn't work).
However, we must adhere to a fundamental way of consistently completing our studies and practicing.
I'll do my best to talk about what my consistent and persistent efforts got me without sounding like an arrogant blowhard or braggart trying to impress you with what I've accomplished.
But it's the only thing I've got to show you that demonstrates the power of persistent consistency.
My consistent and persistent studies and practice allowed me
to produce pictures good enough to work as a professional photographer and get awards for my work in shows.
Once I started working as a photojournalist, I did very well with newspapers because I consistently called the newspapers daily
with story ideas I could cover.
I worked seven days a week and took off a week or two when I could.
I did over 500 assignments for the New York Times.
I made a decent living as a freelance photojournalist because of persistent consistency.
The same persistent consistency was applied to my photography classes, awarded "best art class" in 2018 and 2022.
Persistent consistency requires effort.
And there's nothing fancy or elusive about it.
But we have two options.
Option one is that we aren’t persistently consistent in our studies and practice and don’t improve.
Option two is that we are persistently consistent, and as a result, we see improvement in our photography.
We know what to do because we understand how to produce the best pictures possible.
Option two seems like the results I imagine we all want.
