Hello, .
Both education and experience are crucial in becoming better photographers because one without the other is like a bird with a broken wing that struggles to take flight.
You may be familiar with me enough to know that I frequently use the terms study and practice because if we're to be skillful in our craft, we need disciplined studies and practice.
I usually refer to education as study and
experience as practice.
During my classes, education is the studying part of learning about photography and camera operation.
We discuss and study exposure, metering, focusing, aperture shutter speed, light, composition, etc.
Experience, on the other hand, is the application part, where we put what we studied into practice.
We need both.
But what makes what we learned sink in and become easy and second nature is practice.
Practice makes us better and more fluid in what we do.
This is why, in all of my classes, the participants don't just learn during the class; we also practice during the lessons.
This ensures that everyone leaves the class knowing how to do what was taught so they can continue their studies and practice independently after the class.
During the Introduction To Photography classes or a series of In-Person or Online One-on-One Private Instruction meetings, homework is given between the sessions to reinforce further what was taught and practiced during the meetings.
Our studies and practice must be intentional and
frequent because this is the way to significantly improve our photography skills.
But that doesn't mean it should be tedious.
I usually email students after each class is completed.
Included in that
email is some guidance that says something like this;
"Practice what we've covered while it's fresh in your mind, and please set aside time to keep practicing.
Even if you set aside five minutes daily to make one photograph, this is good practice if you review your picture, critique it after creating it, and make any corrections you feel are needed."
With a good mix of studies and practice, we'll be able to become better photographers.
So please, keep studying and practicing your photography.
