Hello, .
Every one of us who uses a camera and makes pictures is on a personally defined path to improving our photography.
It's our own unique path and it never stops.
The question that moves us along that path is "How can we be better photographers"?
Foundationally, that's a good question and well worth asking over and over again.
However, it's not a question that digs deep
enough.
It's a starting point, but we've gotta go further.
We need to ask ourselves some tough questions.
The tough questions should be follow-up questions to improve our work.
Are We Willing To Do Anything About Being Better Photographers?
Most importantly, how we answer the above question will help our work improve or stay the same.
Of course, our work
remains the same if we're not willing to do something.
And, If we're willing to do something, we have to ask ourselves...
How Do We Think We Need To Improve?
Because self-critiques are the best critiques, we can only answer this question for ourselves.
Our critique will require a factual, critical analysis based on the intent of communication and elements of the
composition of what we mean by "better."
Since answering this question is a critique of our work, we should NOT look to others to critique our work because, once again, the most valuable opinions of our work are self-critiques.
Why Do We Want To Improve?
Furthermore, by answering why, we get clarity on the purpose, and if we clarify the purpose, we create a strong desire to keep working to improve or work.
Additionally, the "why" can show us the direction and priority of practice/effort.
What Efforts Are Needed To Improve?
Without a doubt, this is where the rubber meets the road.
Because with skillful and appropriate effort, things happen.
And, of course, our actions depend on how we answer the previous questions.
Usually, we'll need to improve our understanding of camera operation, composition, and light.
At other times, we need to clarify who we are as photographers.
However, we can study and practice to clarify everything mentioned.
