Earlier today, during the Getting to Know Your Camera class, a photographer/student used the term "a whole new world" regarding their approach to and understanding of photography.

That happens when we move our exposure dials from automatic to priority exposure modes like aperture and shutter priority. And if we're already working in those modes, learning to work in manual exposure mode will also open up a whole new world.

A whole new world of understanding camera operation, light, and composition opens up because we get access to camera functionality like controlling depth of field with aperture priority and controlling whether we record motion as blurred static (frozen) in shutter priority mode.

We also get access to a variety of focusing modes and areas as well as different metering patterns.

All this additional camera functionality allows us to intentionally and thoughtfully observe and describe the light we see and begin to understand how to compose the best pictures possible.

And when we intentionally compose the best pictures possible based on how we think about what we see, we create uniquely composed pictures that no one but us can make.

And what if the timing doesn't work for you in any of my scheduled group classes? Private in-person or online lessons suited to your schedule are always an option. 

And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
