Hello ,
I like to think there are some things out there that may exist.
Folkloric creatures, life on other planets, etc.
The thing with those things is that they may exist, although the probability of their existence varies.
But the bottom line is that they objectively (factually) exist or don't exist.
I can't say the same about good and bad photographs.
A good or bad photograph exists only as an opinion, emotion, or feeling.
And our opinion, emotion, or feeling about something is subjective.
A good or bad photograph only exists in the
mind of the one giving the opinion of good or bad.
As the creators of our photography, the only opinion that matters is ours.
On the other hand, a photograph can be objective or subjective.
An objective
photograph is one that visually communicates verifiable facts.
News photography is an example of objective photography.
Personal opinions and feelings influence a subjective photograph and don't need to be grounded in fact and provable.
Art photography is an example of subjective photography.
As photographers, our compositional intent should consider whether we want to create photographs communicating facts,
opinions, or feelings and adjust our thoughts and actions accordingly.
The next series of the Introduction to Photography class starts in February.
And there are other scheduled group classes
below.
Smaller classes mean better learning, so no more than five participants and me are in each class.
But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker.
And remember, we learn and improve by
doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
That's all for now; thanks for reading!
Sam
