Hello, .
If we've got no light, we've got no photography.
To put a finer point on it, if we've got no transmitting/Illuminating light source, we've got no photography.
Sunny, cloudy, artificial, inside or outside, it doesn't matter where or what type, as long as we get it.
The sun is the primary natural illuminating light source, but we can toss fire into the natural light category, too.
Light bulbs are considered illuminating light sources, too, but they're artificial.
We usually photograph reflective light sources; their characteristics depend on the transmitting light source.
Yesterday, I met with two students for private lessons, and each photographer spent a lot of time discussing light.
We've been working together for a while, and talking about light like we did yesterday is a big step from where we started, which was with basic camera operation.
We need to observe and describe light so we know how to operate our cameras to get the picture we want or the best picture we can.
We can study and practice photography
by observing light, describing its characteristics, understanding how it affects camera operation, and imagining compositional possibilities.
Color, direction, distribution, duration, intensity, movement, and texture.
These characteristics inform us of what we can and can't do regarding camera operation to get the best picture possible.
While we constantly observe them, learning how to describe them and connect them to camera operation is the foundation of composition.

The Introduction To Photography class will get you more involved in photography by learning how to work your camera in manual exposure mode. You'll get a good foundation in the basics of photography while learning reliable creative techniques. Classes are scheduled to start on March 25, March 27 and April
14.
Smaller classes mean better learning, so class sizes are limited to 5 participants plus me.
But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker.
Private in-person or online lessons suited to your schedule are always an option.
