Yesterday, a photographer I worked with needed to fine-tune a technique taught during the Introduction To Photography class.

Specifically, we studied and practiced metering and tonal placement.

Metering and tonal placement allow us to change tonality before making the picture to achieve the desired tonality.

Alternatively, we can make a photograph, critique the tonality, and correct it based on whether we want to increase or decrease it.

Making the picture first and critiquing is unnecessary if we can effectively operate our camera and describe and understand the light we see.

We've also got to consider which setting(s) we use to achieve the result we want.

We can use aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to increase tonality, but we need to consider what additional visual characteristics our choice affects beyond tonality.

To effectively apply the technique of meeting a tonal placement, we always start by metering to achieve a standard tonality for the specific thing or color we want control tonality for.

We then make any adjustments before making the picture based on how we describe the color we see, such as bright, dark, or mid-color.

If we describe the color as a mid-color, no adjustment is needed.

Metering and tonal placement techniques are less about color and more about understanding light, intentional camera operation, and composition.

I can help you with metering and tonal placement, which'll get your exposures the way you want 'em the first time.

Introduction To Photography classes are scheduled to start on March 25, March 27 and April 14. Class sizes are limited to 5 participants plus me.

Private in-person or online lessons suited to your schedule are always an option. 

While all my classes will involve you more in how we make pictures, the Introduction To Photography class is the most comprehensive when it comes to getting a good foundation in the basics of photography. If you want to learn to work your camera in a way that'll provide the most creative technique available, the Introduction To Photography group class is the thing to do..

Smaller classes mean better learning, so no more than five participants and me are in each class. 

But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker. 

And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
