We make a photograph at least twice.

I'm not talking about making a picture first, critiquing it, and then making it again to make corrections. If we did, that'd be three times.

The first picture happens when we see something that grabs our attention, observe and evaluate it, and then imagine the final photograph; the imagined picture is the first one we make.

The second time we make the picture is when we press the shutter release and make the exposure.

But a lot happens between when we imagine the picture and decide to make the exposure.

We observe and evaluate the light that grabs our attention and involve ourselves in camera operation and composition.

I mentioned only three areas of involvement, but those areas have levels of detail, complexity, and nuances that'd be helpful to know and understand to make the picture we want.

And our level of knowing and understanding directly correlates to our ability to create compelling imagery.

When working in automatic exposure mode, we're doing less than possible.

Working with the camera on our phone is better than working in automatic exposure mode because it offers more camera functionality, allowing for more technique.

This thought process happens with every camera we use, whether it's a simple one like the one on our phone or a more complex one like a DSLR or mirrorless.

It's all about the thought process used to create the photograph, and the more we know and understand, the better our photography.

Introduction To Photography classes are now scheduled for April. Class sizes are limited to 5 participants plus me. 

Private in-person or online lessons suited to your schedule are always an option. 

While all my classes will involve you more in how we make pictures, the Introduction To Photography class is the most comprehensive when it comes to getting a good foundation in the basics of photography. If you want to learn to work your camera in a way that'll provide the most creative technique available, the Introduction To Photography group class is the thing to do..

Smaller classes mean better learning, so no more than five participants and me are in each class. 

But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker. 

And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
