Utility is a common, unchanging, universal standard. 

Taste is a changeable, personal preference.

A camera and lens is a utility. 
Which camera and lens we prefer is taste.

When composing our pictures, the settings on our camera and lens are utility, while how we use the settings on our camera and lens are preferences.

When creating a picture, our strength isn't the utilities we use. Instead, our strength lies in understanding how to operate the utility to get our preferred composition.

When it comes to photographic composition, it's more helpful to say, "I prefer this compositional choice over that compositional choice," instead of saying, "This is wrong."

When we turn our taste into a universal standard, like a rule of composition, we limit our creative options.

And when we limit our creative options, we limit creativity.

We use our utilities to express ourselves, but we must be careful not to turn our expression into a utility because people are interested in something other than utilities, and that something other is how we express ourselves through the utilities we use.

Introduction To Photography classes are now scheduled for April. Class sizes are limited to 5 participants plus me. 

Private in-person or online lessons suited to your schedule are always an option. 

While all my classes will involve you more in how we make pictures, the Introduction To Photography class is the most comprehensive when it comes to getting a good foundation in the basics of photography. If you want to learn to work your camera in a way that'll provide the most creative technique available, the Introduction To Photography group class is the thing to do..

Smaller classes mean better learning, so no more than five participants and me are in each class. 

But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker. 

And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
