Some people describe themselves as big-picture thinkers, while others describe themselves as detail-oriented thinkers. 

As photographers, we've gotta be both.

Big-picture thinking refers to seeing the overall objective, a goal, and the entirety of something. In our case, that'd be the photograph we want to make.  

We're all good at this. 

We see something and imagine the picture we'd like to make. 

We also think creatively and strategically about achieving these goals. 

For example, getting up before sunrise to make a compelling landscape or seascape image. 

We have a vision of the picture we'd like to make and plan how to make it.

That's the big-picture stuff. 

While that's an excellent quality, we also need to know the details of camera operation in light and composition to make that big picture in our heads come to fruition in our camera.

And that's where the detail-oriented thinking needs to kick in.

This is where we might fall short because we need to know and understand the specifics of light, composition, and camera operation. 

But especially camera operation.

Because as much as we might know and understand about composition and light if we don't know how to operate our camera to achieve the composition we want (the big picture in our head) or the best composition we can get, the big picture never gets created.

I've got two classes today that'll help you understand the details to make the big picture. Introduction To Photography and Learn To Think Like A Photographer

Private in-person or online lessons suited to your schedule are always an option. 

While all my classes will involve you more in how we make pictures, the Introduction To Photography class is the most comprehensive when it comes to getting a good foundation in the basics of photography. If you want to learn to work your camera in a way that'll provide the most creative technique available, the Introduction To Photography group class is the thing to do..

Smaller classes mean better learning, so no more than five participants and me are in each class. 

But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker. 

And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
