While working with a photographer, they said they don't know what they're doing.

I disagreed and asked them to make the best picture of whatever they wanted.

The photographer did, and I asked them what they thought about the picture they'd created, in other words, to critique the image they made.

By asking the photographer why they weren't thrilled with the picture, I got them involved in their composition by self-critiquing their work and realizing they knew what they were doing through the self-critique.

But even though they knew what they were doing, they needed to understand how to talk about it in terms of observing light and then operating their camera in a way that produced the best picture possible based on how they thought about the light observed. 

When we don't understand how to operate our camera to get the best picture possible—note that I didn't say the image we want—we get frustrated. 

I know the frustration because, as new photographers, we've all been there. 

However, what we're frustrated with identifies where to study and practice. 

After making our photographs, critique the elements of composition and relate each element to camera operation.

This approach to creating pictures provides a good foundation for study and practice,  gets us more involved, and improves our understanding of camera operation, light, and composition. 

Be patient with yourself when it comes to your photography studies and practice.

An Introduction To Photography class starts this Sunday, March 10. 

Private in-person or online lessons suited to your schedule are always an option. 

While all my classes will involve you more in how we make pictures, the Introduction To Photography class is the most comprehensive when it comes to getting a good foundation in the basics of photography. If you want to learn to work your camera in a way that'll provide the most creative technique available, the Introduction To Photography group class is the thing to do..

Classes start soon.

Smaller classes mean better learning, so no more than five participants and me are in each class. 

But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker. 

And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
