This past Saturday, I worked with a photographer who's been taking private lessons with me for a couple of years.

They understand camera operation, composition, and light and use various picture creation techniques.

They're an excellent photographer, but they struggle.

Specifically, they need help finding interesting things to photograph during their photography studies and practice.

I understand what that's like because all photographers experience that at some point in their creative development.

In response to their creative struggle, I've guided them in the way my teachers guided me.

Don't get frustrated by trying to find "interesting things" to photograph.

Our frustration comes from looking for something interesting instead of seeing everything as interesting.

The fix for our struggle with the idea that there's nothing new and exciting to see and photograph is challenging ourselves to create interesting pictures from the not-too-interesting things we think we see.

The truth is that no matter what we photograph, it's our work to create interesting pictures.  

Furthermore, the way to make compelling pictures is to make photographs based on the unique way we think about what we see, operate our camera effectively, and create an image that shows how we think about what we see, not just what we see. 

Approaching our work this way, we visually engage with everything, realizing everything can become an exciting picture-making process.  

An Introduction To Photography class starts this Sunday, March 10. 

Private in-person or online lessons suited to your schedule are always an option. 

While all my classes will involve you more in how we make pictures, the Introduction To Photography class is the most comprehensive when it comes to getting a good foundation in the basics of photography. If you want to learn to work your camera in a way that'll provide the most creative technique available, the Introduction To Photography group class is the thing to do..

Classes start soon.

Smaller classes mean better learning, so no more than five participants and me are in each class. 

But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker. 

And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
