What camera do we need to learn photography?

A DSLR? 
Sure.

A mirrorless? 
Yup.

The one on the phone?
Absolutely.

We can use whatever camera we've got because learning photography isn't dependent on a type of camera.

Instead, learning photography is about light, composition, and camera operation.

Yesterday, I worked with three photographers, all wanting to learn photography.

One used a more complex camera, think DSLR or mirrorless, and finished a series of Introduction To Photography lessons. 

The other two were using simple cameras, specifically, the cameras on the phones, and took the Learn To Think Like A Photographer class

While all three did the same things regarding camera operation and compositional thought process, the complexity of the camera determined the amount of time needed to learn to use the camera effectively to do the same things.

More complex cameras offer a definite advantage regarding technique variation and image quality. 

Still, the technique is basically the same regardless of our camera.

And when we get involved in technique, the camera doesn't limit us when it comes to making the best pictures we can.

What limits us is when we don't understand what we're doing.

We need to understand camera operation, composition, and light and get involved in a compositional thought process that involves all three.

However you choose to learn photography with me regardless of whatever camera you use, that's the level of understanding you'll get. 

While all my classes are geared to involve you more in the way we make pictures, the Introduction To Photography class is the most comprehensive when it comes to getting a good foundation in the basics of photography.

If you want to learn to work your camera in a way that'll provide the most creative technique available, the Introduction To Photography group class is the thing to do.

Smaller classes mean better learning, so no more than five participants and me are in each class. 

But smaller classes also mean spots fill up quicker. 

And remember, we learn and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture daily.
