Hello, .
When we're learning photography, and as far as I'm concerned, the learning never stops; we've got to make time to study and practice.
Our studies and practice can include
in-person or online classes and lessons, or a combination of both, to improve our camera operation, composition skills, and understanding of light.
While the formal structure that classes and lessons can provide is an excellent way to
learn, we've got to regularly put into practice outside of class what we've studied and practiced in class.
You'll get homework in my group classes and private lessons.
I can't make you do it, but I certainly don't make it hard to do it.
It's the kind of homework you can do anywhere and anytime.
You don't have to go anywhere special or make pictures of anything specific.
It's homework meant to reinforce technique and understanding.
Technique and understanding that gets you involved in camera operation, composition, and light.
You can do it at the breakfast table or at your workstation.
It doesn't matter where you do it as long as you can see anything, anywhere, and as long as you have your camera, you can do your homework.
Here's the thing: Your homework involves making pictures using the techniques we covered in our meetings.
And since
we, as photographers, record light with a camera to create a photograph, and since light is everywhere unless you're in a cave or a light-tight room, there are nearly endless opportunities to study and practice while doing your homework.
I
make doing your homework as easy and convenient as possible.
Opportunities to practice are always right in front of us.
And if we don't have our camera, we can study and practice by observing and describing the light we see and imagine how we would compose the picture in terms of framing and content and what settings we would use.
We can even use the cameras on our phones.
When we make our studies and practice about visual awareness, we can
practice all the time.
It'd be nice to reinforce camera operation, but we don't need a camera to study and practice our photography.
The Introduction to Photography classes scheduled for March are now open for registration. Other scheduled group classes are below.
