Hello ,
I understand that not everyone understands me.
I also understand that not everyone understands my photography.
But what I do understand is photography.
I also understand that we need to make an effort to understand and be understood.
At some point, I didn't understand photography.
But, as photographers, we've got to understand photography if we want to know how to make the best picture.
So, I made an effort to understand photography so I knew how to be a better photographer.
It's all in the understanding.
Simply put, photography is the observing and recording of light.
And since we usually use a camera to make a picture, we need to understand how camera operation influences photographic composition.
And when we understand camera operation and
light, we know how to compose the best pictures we can, given the circumstances.
Today was the first class of the Introduction To Photography course.
The desired outcome of the class and the whole course is to understand how camera
operation, the light we work with, and compositional intent all work together to drive the creation of the best photographs we can make.
Today, we started working in manual exposure mode, covering metering, focusing, light, and
controlling tonality with aperture shutter speed and ISO.
I also stressed the importance of self-critiques because if we want to improve our photography, we need to define where we feel our picture fell short.
I don't think it's helpful to you if I critique your work.
But if you tell me where the composition fell short, I can help you understand what went wrong and what you could've done to improve it.
We
covered a lot on day one, but the main thing to get is a basic understanding of camera operation in manual exposure mode, knowing how to control tonality by changing exposure and ISO in increments of one stop.
The homework that's given is
meant to reinforce what we covered.
And next week, we'll build on week one's studies and practice.
Two more are starting soon if you missed today's class.
So, if you want to learn to observe light,
think like a photographer, operate a camera effectively, and create unique compositions, register for one of the upcoming two Introduction To Photography classes.
One starts on Wednesday, January 10, and the other on Sunday, January 14.
The January 14th class has two spots left.
Smaller classes mean better learning, So there are no more than five participants and me in each class.
You know where to find me when you need help with your studies and practice.
And remember, we learn
and improve by doing, so practice making at least one picture today.
That's all for now; thanks for reading! (And your understanding?)
Sam
I'll help you be a better photographer—study and practice photography
with me.
And what if the timing doesn't work for you in any of my scheduled group classes? If that's the case, let's schedule a one-time lesson or a series of in-person or online private instruction that covers the same things as my group classes.
Ways to work with me are listed below.
