Hello ,
When working with students during my classes, I always give homework related to what we covered so they can continue their studies and practice outside our meetings.
And since I know that we all have preferences for what we photograph, people, landscapes, street scenes, food, etc., I also encourage the participants in my classes to practice by photographing the things they like to photograph.
However, all those different things are the same on a fundamental level because all those other things are reflective light sources.
And since everything is a reflected light source, our opportunity to practice honing our skills in camera operation, composition, and working with light is always available.
Because unless we're in a light-tight space, which we rarely are, as long as we can see something, we can study and practice photography almost anytime and anywhere.
And I think taking pictures under different lighting conditions and of various subjects is a good idea.
Make pictures when there's
bright light and when there's very little light.
Make pictures of a variety of subjects too. For example, subjects that move and subjects that don't move,
When we make pictures under various lighting conditions and subjects, we become familiar with camera operation, composition, and characteristics of light.
And when we become familiar with these things, we become familiar with photography and become better photographers.
And it doesn't matter what camera we use.
So, I encourage you to
make a picture now.
And use whatever camera you have with you, even the camera on your phone, of whatever you see.
And while you're making the picture, pay attention to what you're doing with your camera to focus, control tonality and what you include in the frame of your photograph, and then critique your photo.
When we do this, we're practicing our photography in a way that will get us better with camera operation, composition, and light; this type of practice pushes us to see things differently and expands our visual awareness.
